1 NYPD sergeant killed, 1 wounded in shootout with Bronx burglary suspect

PARKCHESTER, The Bronx -- (WPIX) -- An NYPD sergeant was shot and killed and another was wounded while pursuing a burglary suspect in the Bronx Friday afternoon, Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed in a press conference.
Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, 41, a 19-year veteran of the force, and father of two, died after he was shot in the head at point blank range during the shootout with the suspect, officials say.
Another sergeant, Emmanuel Kwo, a 9-year veteran of the force, was shot multiple times in the legs. He was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center.
Officers responded to a 911 call of a home invasion at in progress around 2:45 p.m. on the fifth floor of 1460 Beach Ave., in the Parkchester section of the Bronx.
The caller said her estranged husband, later identified as 35-year-old Manuel Rosales, had forced his way into the apartment with a gun.
As patrol cars were responding, the suspect fled the area in a red jeep to Bronx River Avenue, in the Van Nest section of the Bronx.
Minutes later, the suspect's vehicle was observed by officers at Noble Court and Bronx River Avenue, just a half mile from the scene.
As officers approached the vehicle parked on Bronx River Avenue, the suspect fired at the officers with a 45-caliber semi-automatic handgun. Police returned fire, striking the suspect.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say Rosales have 17 prior arrests in Suffolk County.
During the gun battle, the two sergeants were shot. They were both rushed to Jacobi Medical Center where Sgt. Tuozzolo later died from his injuries.
Sgt. Kwo was shot multiple times in the legs and is in stable condition.
